Whether you’re a regular on the ROTDG stage, haven’t acted for a while, or simply fancy trying something new, we’ve got three practical workshops coming up over the next few months.

The emphasis throughout is on having a go, learning some useful techniques and enjoying ourselves. You don’t need to be an experienced actor – just come prepared to join in!

Actor’s Workshop with Sally Eaton – Sunday 22 November

We kick things off on Sunday 22 November, 7–9pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, with an Actor’s Workshop led by our friend Sally Eaton, an experienced actor with the Lace Market Theatre.

This will be a relaxed and practical session looking at some of the building blocks that help bring a performance to life. Through warm-ups and small-group exercises, we’ll explore areas including movement and physicality, voice and projection, working with a script and finding character.

It’s an ideal opportunity to refresh some skills, build confidence or simply try out a few different approaches in a friendly environment.

Actor’s Workshop with Tabitha Stuart – Sunday 10 January

After Christmas, we’re back on Sunday 10 January, 7–9pm at St Mary’s Church Hall for another Actor’s Workshop, this time led by Tabitha Stuart.

Many of us know Tabitha through our friends at Robin Hood Theatre Company, where she is an experienced actor and director as well as the company’s Communications Director. Away from the stage she is a barrister – so she knows more than a little about using the voice, holding an audience and delivering words with confidence!

Again, this will be a hands-on evening, exploring movement, voice, script work and character through practical exercises. With a different workshop leader comes a different perspective, so there’s every reason to come along even if you attended the November session.

Accents Workshop with Marianne Samuels – Sunday 28 February

Then, on Sunday 28 February, 7–9pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, we’re doing something a little different.

Fancy swapping your Nottinghamshire accent for some American swagger or Cockney charm?

Our Accents Workshop will be led by professional voice, dialect and presentation coach Marianne Samuels. Marianne has an MA in Voice Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and has worked with organisations including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Nottingham Playhouse and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, as well as coaching performers for stage and screen.

During the evening we’ll concentrate on American and Cockney, exploring the sounds, rhythms and characteristics that make the accents distinctive. Marianne will introduce practical techniques to help make an accent more convincing and consistent – and hopefully give us some tools we can take away and use in future productions.

No previous accent work is needed. It’s designed to be practical, accessible and fun.

Tickets for this workshop are £5 for ROTDG members and £10 for non-members.

Come and have a go

These workshops are part of our aim to offer members more opportunities to develop skills, build confidence and enjoy theatre beyond rehearsing for a particular production.

You can come to one, two or all three. Each session stands on its own and offers something different.

So whether you want to sharpen up your acting, explore a character in a new way, make more of your voice – or finally discover whether your Cockney is more EastEnders than East End – we’d love to see you there.
